Parents and Dolores County Residents,


Our BEST grant application for the new elementary school has been submitted to the state. Since the bond did not pass last November, we have been working diligently on a quality BEST grant application to get support from the state for a new elementary school. I feel very good about our application and the project that was submitted. 

Our project for the grant focuses on the construction of a new elementary school, removal of the old elementary school and removal of the old high school building. The new elementary location is north of our current elementary school. The scope of programming needs determined through discussions with staff, and committee members last fall are all included in the project along with the administration offices in the new building. The all purpose room has a full size court so it will be able to have multiple functions during the school day and for after school activities. All safety and security issues were addressed in the project providing the safest environment possible for our elementary students and staff. 

The removal of the old high school will reduce the total square footage of building space that we are having to upkeep and pay utilities for at this time. Memorial Hall will be a stand-alone building at the completion of the project so there will be a few repairs to the outside of the building, and some utility work with the removal of the old high school. Reducing square footage in the district will allow us to use our funds more efficiently for educational purposes and maintenance of the buildings we are using every day. 

The timeline for this process began last summer to last November with the bond election, and up to last Friday with the submission of the BEST grant application. Moving forward, there will be some communication with the state about additional requests they might need to support our application with the interviews set for the end of May 2022. This year, the matching percentage of funds for schools is 64% of the total project. With our application there were two waivers submitted to reduce our matching amount to fund the project. These waivers will be reviewed and voted on by the BEST board separate from the new elementary school project so it is possible to receive the grant for the project without receiving the waivers. If both of the waivers are accepted our matching percentage would be 44% of the total project. 

The bond campaign for the new elementary school began last summer and we will be continuing the process moving forward. With the award of the BEST grant the Elementary Bond committee will once again be asking the community to support passing a bond in November of 2022 for the matching funds for the BEST grant. The committee needs more volunteers this year to help campaign for the bond to get information out accurately to the community. Look for meeting invites once the committee begins meeting this spring. 

Our end goal is for the construction of a new elementary school for our students and staff. Thank you to everyone who has supported the process so far, and who have provided input for the new elementary school. Improving our elementary school educational environment is our number one priority for improved academic achievement, student safety, and the security of the building.
